Ali Krieger has announced she will retire from professional soccer at the end of the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League season.
The 38-year-old Gotham FC defender and USWNT veteran has had a professional career spanning 18 years and is targeting a maiden NWSL title in her final season.
“The time has officially come to announce that this will be my last season playing the beautiful game that I love so much,” Krieger said in a video posted on her Instagram.
“It has been a rewarding ride and a true honour to play at the highest level for so many years and I can’t wait for one more to go.
“It’s important for me to announce my retirement early because I want to share this last year fully with my family, friends, teammates, coaches and incredibly supportive fans over the years.
“The 2023 season is an opportunity to celebrate, but make no mistake: my entire focus is on winning the NWSL championship with Gotham FC. The NWSL title is still one of the only trophies I have yet to win in my career, and therefore I will give absolutely everything to this team this season. I cannot wait to share this year with all of you.”
Krieger played college soccer for Penn State Nittany Lions between 2003 and 2006, before joining the Washington Freedom.
She moved to FFC Frankfurt in 2007…
