Alexia Putellas has signed a new two-year Barcelona contract with the option of a further year.
The two-time Ballon d’Or winner’s deal was due to expire at the end of the season but she has now commited her future to the club until at least 2026.
The Athletic reported this month discussions between Barcelona and Putellas had resumed and both parties were close to an agreement after negotiations had been on standby as the midfielder focused on returning to full fitness following injury.
Contract negotiations had also been on standby following a dispute over an international call-up in February. Although there was initial tension between the club and player, they sat down to discuss the issue and reached an understanding, and the atmosphere between both parties is positive once more.
Despite enticing offers from the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), Putellas’ intention was always to extend her stay at Barcelona, but she wanted to be sure of the direction of the club’s project and how much of a part she would be playing.
