Alexia Putellas has been named women’s footballer of the year at The Best FIFA Awards for 2022.
Putellas, 29, won the award, her second in a row, ahead of England’s Euro 2022 winner Beth Mead and USWNT star Alex Morgan.
Barcelona’s perfect 2021-22 Liga F season was in large part down to Putellas’ remarkable contributions.
The club captain finished the league campaign with 18 goals — 34 in all competitions — and 15 assists.
Putellas also helped Barcelona win the Copa de la Reina and reach the Champions League final, where the attacking midfielder scored her side’s only goal in a 3-1 defeat by Lyon.
But Putellas’ potential involvement in last summer’s European Championship was derailed by the ACL injury she sustained on the eve of the tournament in July.
That injury meant the Spain international missed the tournament and did not play again in 2022.
