Alex Morgan weighs in on NWSL expansion draft: ‘It should not exist’

The reaction to Friday’s NWSL expansion draft for Bay FC and Utah Royals FC has continued into this week, with San Diego Wave forward Alex Morgan saying the selection process “should not exist.”

Morgan’s reaction came after her now-former teammate Rachel Hill, who was selected by Bay FC in the draft, posted a thank you to San Diego on Monday. “Did not think I’d be sitting here writing this after only 1 season,” Hill wrote on Instagram. “I’ve loved every second I had in San Diego and I’m sad it’s come to an end like this.”

Morgan shared Hill’s post to her Instagram with her own caption: “The @NWSL expansion draft should not exist. Period. If you reach free agency and choose the club and city you want to play for, you deserve the (opportunity) to see that through. It was torture watching the expansion draft, really.”

Hill joined San Diego in December 2022 as a free agent from the Chicago Red Stars. She signed a two-year contract through the 2024 season. The forward played 18 games for the Wave last season, totaling 1,141 minutes.
