Alex Baena’s legal case against Federico Valverde over alleged punch is dropped

Alex Baena’s legal case against Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde has been dismissed by a magistrates’ court as it is claimed there is no evidence of criminality.

Valverde, 24, was accused of punching Villarreal’s Baena, 21, during a furious confrontation in the aftermath of Real Madrid’s 3-2 home defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu in April.

The Uruguayan is alleged to have confronted Baena – a Spain under-21 international – in the area where the team buses park up at the stadium and threw a punch at him.

Baena, who was later seen with a bruised and swollen cheekbone, filed a police complaint over the incident but that has now been dismissed.

Prior to this decision, the investigating judge had proposed to the Competition Committee that Valverde should be suspended for five matches.

The potential suspension is still hanging over Valverde’s head despite the case being thrown out of court.

Real Madrid still have the option to appeal Valverde’s ban, which is due to begin at the start of next season.

As it is a very high sporting sanction and the judge has dismissed the legal case, Madrid will be hoping Valverde’s punishment is reduced at the very least.
