Alessia Russo anxious to sort future ahead of Women’s World Cup

Alessia Russo is anxious to get her future clarified before the Women’s World Cup begins next month.

The England international, 24, will leave Manchester United when her contract with the Women’s Super League club expires on Friday.

She is widely expected to join WSL rivals Arsenal, with the Gunners having a world-record bid for her rejected on deadline day in January.

Russo will be a key player for Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses in Australia and New Zealand and wants to be able focus all of her efforts on the tournament once her next club is confirmed.

“It’s the state of football,” she said. “You’ve got to get things sorted.

“There’s no nice time to sort things like that out, but now I’m here, it’s nice to have a full focus on a massive tournament coming up.”

Russo’s future was the subject of much debate over the closing months of the season, something she now admits was difficult.

“Towards the end of the season it was tough and the summer has been tough,” she added.

“You don’t like things in the media about you but that’s football and that’s the state of the women’s game.

“I just turned it off, took a break on holiday and completely switched off with all my friends and family.
