After Savy King’s on-field collapse, why wasn’t Angel City’s match cancelled?

As Angel City FC defender Savy King begins her recovery following last night’s on-field collapse during a 2-0 win over the Utah Royals, the focus remains on why the remainder of the match was played.

The NWSL confirmed on Saturday in a statement that King left the field in stable condition after a concerning medical event, has remained in stable condition, and will continue to be evaluated. The league also addressed the continuation of the match

“League protocols were followed from both a medical and game operations perspective. We are grateful to the Angel City medical staff as well as to local paramedics who handled this difficult situation seamlessly.  As always, the NWSL will review and determine if changes to that protocol need to be made,” the NWSL statement said.

League protocols don’t always mix with public sentiment, however.

“Prayers for Savy King as well as her loved ones and the players that were on the field,” Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman posted to her Instagram story in a text post. “In no world should that game have continued…”
