All-Timers
A final for the ages
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz — the heir apparent to the Big Three in men’s tennis — and a very-much-still-in-command Novak Djokovic faced off at the All England Club in one of the marquee matches in recent memory Sunday. The 20-year-old turned in a seismic result, besting the 36-year-old 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in an electric matchup.
It’s the second Grand Slam title for the Spanish phenom. The Serbian Djokovic, meanwhile, will have to wait on a potential historic Slam No. 24 — and possible GOAT status. Time will tell if Alcaraz is the kryptonite that will truly slow the Djoker, but it sure looks like it.
The women’s side saw an incredible outcome of its own: Marketa Vondrousova became the first unseeded player to win the women’s title. That meant Ons Jabeur was handed her third loss in three Grand Slam final appearances. The Tunisian called the defeat the “most painful” of her career.
