Ron Rivera’s time with the Commanders is coming to an end. The team announced that it had officially fired the veteran coach on Monday on the heels of a 4-13 season.
“I want to thank Ron and his wife Stephanie for all they did for the Commanders and DMV community, especially during the ownership transition,” owner Josh Harris said in a statement. “Ron helped navigate this organization though some challenging times. He is a good man and thoughtful leader who has positively contributed to this organization and the NFL. I wish the Rivera family nothing but the best moving forward.”
That the Commanders fired Rivera isn’t a surprise. The 62-year-old posted a 26-40-1 record in four seasons in Washington and led the team to just one playoff appearance which came during his first season in 2020. Even in that campaign, the Commanders had a losing record, and they peaked as an 8-8-1 team in 2022.
But while Rivera’s performance on the field left a lot to be desired, he guided Washington with a steady hand off the field amid chaos, as Harris mentioned. He was a key spokesperson for the team during a tumultuous period that saw the team change its name twice and endure scandal after scandal under former owner Daniel Snyder.
