2025 WNBA free agency tracker: Breanna Stewart, Alyssa Thomas among star players to receive core designation

The 2025 WNBA free agency period is moving right along, and the first big domino has reportedly fallen. According to ESPN, the Las Vegas Aces, Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks have agreed to a blockbuster deal that will send Jewell Loyd and the No. 13 overall pick in the 2025 draft to the Aces, Kelsey Plum, the No. 9 pick and a second-round pick in 2026 to the Sparks and the No. 2 pick, a 2026 first-round pick and Li Yueru to the Storm. 

Plum and Yueru’s involvement will necessitate sign-and-trade agreements, so that deal cannot become official until Feb. 1 when free agent contracts can be ratified. That should set the stage for plenty of other moves to be finalized in short order once the moratorium is lifted. 

This year’s class is once again filled with a number of stars, though a number of the biggest names, including Breanna Stewart, Alyssa Thomas, Satou Sabally and Plum have already been cored by their respective teams.
