2025 WNBA Draft: Sky GM says Ariel Atkins trade had nothing to do with this year’s class

Ahead of the 2025 WNBA Draft, numerous general managers joined the media for a conference call Thursday to discuss their own teams, top prospects and what might happen come Monday night. While the executives obviously did not want to give away all their secrets, there were still some illuminating quotes. 

Here’s a quick roundup of what we learned from Chicago Sky GM Jeff Pagliocca, Dallas Wings GM Curt Miller, Seattle Storm GM Talisa Rhea and Washington Mystics GM Jamila Wideman. 

One of the biggest moves of the offseason, particularly in how it relates to the upcoming draft, was the Chicago Sky’s decision to trade the No. 3 overall pick, as well as future draft capital, to the Washington Mystics in exchange for Ariel Atkins. 

Pagliocca and the Sky have received plenty of criticism for the deal, especially the inclusion of a 2027 first-round pick swap. While there are still many who disagree with the trade, the move has looked better for the Sky after a number of top prospects in this year’s class decided to return to school, incluidng projected lottery pick Olivia Miles.
