The U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team is chasing its eighth consecutive gold medal with a star-studded veteran roster. They started their journey with a 102-76 win against Japan on Tuesday but still have two more games in the preliminary round.
Team USA is currently at the top of the group C standings, followed by Germany, Belgium and Japan. The Americans will face Belgium on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET.
Tuesday’s result against Japan was the United State’s 56th consecutive win in the Olympics. The Americans have not lost a game since the semifinals of the 1992 Barcelona Games.
The dynamic duo of A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart led the team on Tuesday with a combined 46 points and 21 rebounds between them. However, beating Japan was a full group effort as every single player on the roster scored at least two points. One thing the Americans could improve on is defending from beyond the arc because Japan was able to register 15 3-pointers against them.
The American roster has a lot of veteran experience, including Diana Taurasi, who is competing her sixth and final Summer Games.
