After finishing just one spot off the bottom of the table in 2023, it’s been a totally different year for Kansas City Current, who secured a respectable fourth placing in the NWSL regular season.
The Current has shed their label of being a boring and predictable side, grabbing a league-high 57 goals. Summer signing Temwa Chawinga has smashed records left, right and center for the Current all season. The Malawian star finished with 20 regular season goals and a further six assists. Her presence alone has elevated the Current from also-rans to a major threat.
KC come into the playoffs in fierce form. They’ve already seen off Gotham FC to claim the Summer Cup, are unbeaten in eight NWSL fixtures and have won four on the bounce. Vlatko Andonovski’s side are certainly contenders for the trophy.
What does Kansas City Current’s playoff record look like?
Having been formed for just four seasons, Kansas City Current has an up-and-down playoff record. They didn’t qualify for the playoffs in 2023 or 2021, finishing in 11th and 10th place, respectively.
In 2022, however, the Current were beaten finalists. They lost 2-0 at Audi Field against Portland Thorns as Sophia Smith’s opener and an own goal secured the Thorns a record third playoff title.
