What allegedly began as an argument in 1916 between four men to determine who was the most patriotic, the hot dog eating contest has evolved into one of America’s longest and most cherished sporting events. Once again on the Fourth of July, the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is set to take place at Coney Island in New York.
Two separate contests will go down – the first being the women’s contest, followed by the men’s contest, with each winner taking home a cool $10,000.
Like many contests in recent memory, this year features two of the most dominant competitive eaters in history. On the women’s side, Miki Sudo, the defending champion and current women’s hot dog-eating world record holder, goes for her ninth championship belt. And on the men’s side, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut seeks to add an eighth consecutive championship belt. If he wins, it’ll be his 16th Mustard Belt.
