The U.S. men and women will be seeking their first Olympic figure skating medals in singles since 2010 and 2006, respectively, when they take the ice at the Beijing Olympics. The figure skating competition will take place at Capital Indoor Stadium, which hosted indoor volleyball at the 2008 Summer Games.
Japan is looking for its third straight gold in men’s singles after star Yuzuru Hanyu went back-to-back in 2014 and 2018 — in part thanks to American Nathan Chen’s missteps in Pyeongchang — although he has been hindered by injury in recent years.
On the women’s side, Russian athletes have been dominating the sport, winning the gold in both 2014 and 2018, as well as five of the last six world titles.
The U.S. has lagged significantly behind several nations, including Russia, China and Germany, in pairs for decades, with its last medal in the discipline coming in 1988. In ice dance, however, the Americans could be in line to win a medal in their fifth straight Games.
Chen, who has dominated men’s singles since 2018, is the top contender for an American medal. Teenager Alysa Liu could challenge for a medal on the women’s side, while ice dance veterans Madison Chock and Evan Bates are seeking their first Olympic medal as well.
