2019 champion Bianca Andreescu hit with brutal luck, forced to skip US Open

2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu has withdrawn from the last Grand Slam tournament of the season in New York, the tournament announced. Andreescu, 23, kicked off her summer on hard courts in Washington, where she was beaten by Marta Kostyuk in the first round.

After Washington, Andreescu also suffered a first-round loss to Camila Giorgi in the Montreal first round. Following her Montreal exit, Andreescu revealed that she was hampered by a back injury in both Washington and Montreal.

Andreescu skipped last week’s WTA 1000 event in Cincinnati but remained hopeful she would be able to compete at the US Open. Andreescu arrived in New York – drew Lesia Tsurenko in the first round – but ultimately decided to skip the tournament.

“Hi everyone. During my match in Washington I started experiencing pain in my back that kept getting worse and I did everything I could the other night in Montreal to play at my highest level.
